Repair guide

When is paintless dent repair the right choice?

Paintless dent repair—usually shortened to PDR—is a controlled method of reshaping a metal panel without repainting it. When the damage and paint condition are suitable, it can preserve the vehicle’s original finish and avoid unnecessary body filler.

What actually happens during PDR?

A technician reads the dent through a striped reflection light. That pattern reveals tiny changes in the panel’s shape. Using specialised tools and controlled pressure, the metal is gradually moved back toward its original geometry.

Tool access may be from behind the panel, or a glue-pulling method may be used from the exterior. The correct approach depends on the panel, reinforcement structure, material and paint condition.

Damage that may suit PDR

  • Door dings and parking dents where the paint has not split.
  • Shallow or medium dents with a workable metal stretch.
  • Some creases and body-line dents when access and paint condition permit.
  • Selected hail-style dents or multiple small impressions.
The useful rule:

If the paint is intact and the metal has not been excessively stretched, PDR may be the least invasive repair. A physical inspection remains the most reliable way to confirm it.

When PDR may not be responsible

PDR is not automatically correct for every dent. Cracked paint, sharply folded metal, inaccessible reinforcement or a heavily stretched panel may require conventional body and paint repair.

A reputable assessment should explain the trade-off instead of promising a method before examining the panel.

What to send for a photo assessment

Photos cannot replace a workshop inspection, but they help us understand the likely repair path.

  • One wider photo showing the full panel.
  • Two angled photos revealing the dent’s depth and edges.
  • A close photo of any scratch, chip or cracked paint.
  • Your vehicle make, model and year.

Why preserving factory paint matters

Original paint has consistent factory application and forms part of a vehicle’s condition history. When it can be safely preserved, PDR avoids colour matching, overspray and refinishing.
